ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- During the 19th Century, Elmira's streets were made of wooden planks and at one point, dirt. In the mid-1800s the roads evolved to bricks and five years before 1900, they were paved with asphalt. Road work in August, 2023 at Roe and Walnut revealed a glimmer of Southern Tier history.  "Originally the roads in the city were just dirt roads and the problem with that is that every time that it rained, they would turn to mud and even when they were dried, they would just kick up a lot of dust," said Archivist Rachel Dworkin, Chemung County Historical Society.
